 {"id":15935,"date":"2024-09-23T17:41:45","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T17:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coastccu1dev.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=15935"},"modified":"2024-09-23T17:41:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T17:41:45","slug":"avoiding-social-security-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coastccu.org\/avoiding-social-security-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"Avoiding Social Security Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As scammers get more sophisticated, Americans must be more vigilant to avoid Social Security scams. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fifth-annual-slam-scam-day-attorney-general-bonta-warns-californians-social#:~:text=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to California Attorney General Rob Bonta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Social Security scams are the most common type of government imposter scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scammers may try to trick you into telling them your Social Security number and other personal information by making you believe the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your number is about to be suspended.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you need a new number.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your benefits are about to be reduced\/increased.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you have been receiving an underpayment\/overpayment of benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone has used your number to commit a crime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you can invest in a scheme to increase your benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What steps can you take to avoid Social Security fraud calls and other Social Security scams?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember: If you owe money or there is another problem with your Social Security benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will send you a letter through the United States Postal Service with payment options and appeal rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if calls, texts, and email messages look and sound legitimate, they can be a trick. Scammers can easily fake logos, letterhead, badges, names, email addresses, website addresses, phone numbers, and caller IDs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be in a hurry to respond to anything. If you are in doubt about any communication, hang up the call, do not click on any link, and do not reply. Take your time to analyze the communication, and ask a trusted friend or family member to offer their analysis. If you believe that the communication is a fraud, you can block the number on your phone or report the email as junk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are still in doubt, give the SSA a call at 1-800-772-1213, or visit their website for other ways to get in touch:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssa.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.ssa.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that the SSA will never do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never contact you by telephone, text, or email asking for sensitive information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never mail or email you anything containing personal information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never send you a text unless you have opted to receive texts for updates, notifications, and enhanced security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never send you a direct message on social media.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never suspend your Social Security number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never threaten to arrest you or take legal action if you don\u2019t give them money or information immediately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never threaten to suspend your bank account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never ask for personal information or payment\u00a0for a benefits increase or cost of living adjustment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never demand that you keep their communication a secret.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never require you to pay with cash, prepaid debit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a money wire.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never send photos of federal credentials or badges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never ask you to move your money so they can keep it safe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never send an agent to your home or anywhere else to receive money.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Does the Social Security office make phone calls?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/scam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cSocial Security employees do contact the public by telephone for business purposes. Ordinarily, the agency calls people who have recently applied for a Social Security benefit, are already receiving payments and require an update to their record, or have requested a phone call from the agency.
