Just as you lock your doors and invest in alarm systems to guard your possessions, you can take steps to protect yourself from identity theft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is identity theft? What is identity fraud?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal or financial information, while identity fraud takes place when someone uses that information to commit a crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you know how to prevent identity theft?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to fight against identity theft on multiple fronts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safeguard your hard-copy information.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lock your mailbox, or have your mail sent to a post office box.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shred documents containing sensitive information before disposing of them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your Social Security card in a secure place, not in your wallet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect yourself against online threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure all your devices have up-to-date anti-virus and anti-malware protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re on a website, make sure the URL begins with https. (The \u201cs\u201d stands for secure.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid public Wi-Fi, but if you use it, be sure to use a VPN (virtual private network) to encrypt your connection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid saving your credit card information on your device.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use passwords wisely.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t write down your passwords or PINs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a password management system to create and store a unique password for every account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up two-step verification to confirm your identity when you log in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your home Wi-Fi has a strong password.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n Identity Protection PIN from the IRS to prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch out for scammers fishing for information.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phishing (email) \u2013 Don\u2019t click on unfamiliar links or download attachments you are not expecting. Watch out for scam emails.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vishing (phone) \u2013 If a phone number isn\u2019t in your contact list, let that call go to voicemail. Never provide personal information over the phone, regardless of the caller\u2019s story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smishing (text) \u2013 Don\u2019t click on any unfamiliar links or download unexpected attachments. Don\u2019t respond to texts from numbers you don\u2019t recognize.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor your credit card account and other accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact the three major credit reporting agencies\u2014 Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion\u2014and request a credit freeze to prevent scammers from opening accounts in your name. You can unfreeze them when you need to open a new account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your credit report every year. You can get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each credit reporting company at<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annualcreditreport.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AnnualCreditReport.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your credit card bills and other bills every month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your online bank account every day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What should you know about identity theft protection?\u00a0<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can purchase a wide variety of services to help safeguard your personal information and reduce the consequences if it is stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Various options include monitoring the internet, dark web, social media, public records, credit scores, and credit card activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alerts:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A range of alert possibilities warn you of suspicious activities, such as new accounts opened in your name, changes to your credit report, loans applied for in your name, high-risk transactions, data breaches, and activity using a child\u2019s Social Security number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fraud Resolution and Identity Restoration:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A number of plans provide professional help to resolve fraud issues and restore your identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Different policies offer financial reimbursement for expenses related to restoring your identity\u2014such as legal fees and the cost of new documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What should you do if you are the victim of identity theft or identity fraud?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to file a report with your local police department.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, make a report to the federal government.
